Mentioned in the earliest of smoking-related medical documents, menthol is an organic compound found in spearmint and peppermint plants that provides a cooling and soothing sensation when inhaled. It’s also commonly added to cough drops, gum, and candies. It’s often used in e-cigarettes to create a cool sensation and to reduce the irritation that some people experience with the higher nicotine levels found in cigarettes.

Chill Out with Menthol Vape: Exploring Cool and Refreshing Flavors

To study how menthol affects inhaled nicotine, researchers performed two experiments on 25 self-reported cigarette smokers who were given V2 standard E-cigarettes and blank cartridges filled with five different concentrations of nicotine (0%, 0, 5, 18, and 24mg/ml) with either 0%, 0.5%, or 3.5% l-menthol in a 70% propylene glycol/30% vegetable glycerin base. Each participant was tested twice, with one session containing six trials each and the order of the flavors being counterbalanced between sessions. Subjects were asked to rate the intensity of Overall Sensation and Coolness/Cold and Irritation/Harshness on a labeled magnitude scale, and to rate how much they liked each flavor on a Labeled Hedonic Scale.
